This sport is highly athletic. The players remain alert and active during the whole game. It is a combination of basketball, hockey, and soccer. The competition provides good exercise along with developing a sense of healthy competition. Running to take the ball from the opponents needs lots of agility and speed. The pace of this game is like no other and thus it is renowned as ‘the fastest game on two feet’.
Lacrosse is not only a men’s game but a women’s too. The known foremost lacrosse game was played by the women players in 1890 in Scotland. Since then, the game has evolved for women and now it is being played in World Games by the women players as well.
Essential equipment to play lacrosse
Lacrosse is played using a lacrosse stick which is also known as crosse. The stick has a head that has a net that is used to catch, pass, carry, and shoot the ball. There is a variation in the selection of crosse size depending on the player’s position. Defensive players go for the long crosse while the offensive players play well with the smaller sticks.
The shaft of the stick is not round but octagonal for improved grip. Shafts are sold separately as well and made mostly from aluminum, scandium, alloys, titanium, plastic, wood, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. The lacrosse ball is white in color for men and yellow for women mainly; however, other colors are also available but not very common. It is produced using a solid rubber as it has to jump and bounce in the field.
Other than playing equipment, protective gears are highly essential to play the game. For the men lacrosse, physical contact is allowed, thus it is important to wear gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouthguard, and helmet. The pad size depends on the playing position. Along with all these gears, the goalies must wear a chest pad to provide protection to the chest and stomach region and a protective cup. Furthermore, a plastic neck guard is also used to cover and protect the neck area.
For the women, the rules for the protective gear are not very tough. They only need to wear a mouthguard and eye gear for their protection. On the other hand, things are almost the same for goalies. A woman goalie must also wear a chest protector, helmet, and gloves.
